What happened in the summer of 2020...
In the first two weeks of July 2020, a cohort of 27 undergraduate and graduate students joined the first edition of the online multidisciplinary course offered by the Law Faculty of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam,
“Disruptive 4.0, a Multidisciplinary Approach to Artificial Intelligence”.
Although originally planned to be a conventional summer school taught in Amsterdam, the COVID-19 dependent transition to an online class turned out to be a net positive. It enabled an especially diverse set of students and lectures spanning many time zones and professions to take part in the lectures and discussions. The participants included students and business representatives from no fewer countries than
Kenya, Poland, China, Austria, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Indonesia, Belgium, Iran, Latvia, Bosnia, Brazil, South Korea, India, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Nigeria, and Germany.
Their backgrounds were : human genetics, law, ethics, communication, computer science, internet of things, mechanical engineering, economics, and cybersecurity.
The first week started by building a theoretical baseline for all participants. Introducing the main concepts and discussing the ethical and legal implications of AI, European and international AI governance, autonomous vehicles, and social robots. The second week explained AI from a technical perspective and took a deep dive into the models behind AI, various levels of automation, AI applications for space exploration as well as the implications of AI for businesses.
The course coordinators are members of the newly created Amsterdam Law and Technology Institute (ALTI):
Ioana Bratu, Tina van der Linden and Arno Lodder.
Lectures were also offered by: Tijman Wismen, Rob van den Hoven van Genderen and Bethany Houghton, also ALTI members.

"My experience in the Summer School was memorable and change making!
I had the opportunity to learn from a multidisciplinary perspective, with high-qualified professors and brilliant colleagues. Even though the whole course was set online, it was too easy for me to feel close to the others during lectures and group discussions: I was able to share my thoughts about different subjects and hear from people with different backgrounds, from all over the world!
This experience made me rethink a lot about my career and academic studies, encouraging me to use all of this knowledge to help building a more inclusive and peaceful world for all. I am very much grateful to the coordinators and other professionals that worked so hard to manage the course.
It was perfect!"
"The opportunity to participate in the Summer School organized by Vrije University Amsterdam was truly gratifying. Although having online summer school lasting for two weeks is a new experience for many participants, the Summer School team refuted any potential skepticism with great organization and execution. First, the speakers gave lectures that were thought-provoking and interesting. Participants' attention was captured every day throughout all sessions. Second, participants in the course were people of different educational and geographical backgrounds from all over the world. I believe that everyone benefited from the opportunity to see different perspectives on many topics we discussed and to be enriched with new friends. Last but not least, the organizing team did a wonderful job. They paid attention to every detail and made sure that every session was going well. They were very receptive and responsive and made participants almost feel no distance. All in all, participation in the Summer School was a great experience and I would recommend everyone interested in the courses offered at the Vrije University Amsterdam to apply."
"I strongly recommend this course to everyoneinterested in the ongoing development and discussionsregarding industrial revolution 4.0. This course sheds lighton what impacts AI will have in future society, and what legal or social issues it brings with it."
